The Kovilthottam Lighthouse is located in Kerala's Kollam district in Kovilthottam. An alternate pattern of black and white bands is painted on the 18-meter-tall lighthouse tower. The lighthouse is available to service the Port of Neendakara, which is located near the Ashtamudi Backwaters' entrance.
The site of Kovilthottam's construction used to be occupied by a flag pole. A wooden tower was later built here. On February 14th, 1953, a blinking DA gas light was placed. After the masonry tower was finished in 1960–1961, this temporary construction was replaced. On February 14th, 1999, a 12V 100W halogen bulb in a 200 mm optic was installed outside the lantern to serve as the emergency supply.
